I think we've done all that and what's left is a place where it's a pretty good place to do business and mind your own and to have a vague interest in politics and absolutely no ambition to change anything. Ever. So what I'm saying is, I guess, I guess it's fine that Osama Bin Laden is gone and is no more, but I think he won. I think he accomplished a lot and none of it good and I think it's because, out of fear, we let him.
This is exactly how I feel, and every time I see supporting evidence, it just depresses me.
but what's worse, I think, is the internal movement to maintain that fear. Be afraid of the terrorists. Be afraid of the abortion-providers. Be afraid of the gays. Be afraid of the economic drain of arts programs. Be afraid of changing energy policy.
I feel kind of like a crazy conspiracy-theorist when I say shit like that, and I have friends who work in politics and activism that tell me it's okay, there ARE people out there who care and work hard, but my fear is that it just isn't enough and nothing will change and it will only get worse.
I mean, really - how do the storms in Alabama happen without any great outcry against how little we're doing to counteract climate change? How does nobody care? How isn't it a big deal? I know the media is a ridiculous circus, but they can only bear so much of the blame - they do have an audience to think of, after all.
