I never read the RM rulebooks, although even I heard abou all the charts.
I will say, in defense of D&D, that it's greatest virtue was that it was such a flawed system. It inspired 10 year old me to think I could come up with better systems, and I designed me the shit out of D&D over the years that followed. It made me what I am today, in no small part.
