The evolution of society and political institutions (ideally, going back to those old places like Mesopotamia, if not earlier neolithic communal sites that have been dug up), but really wherever you want to start, middle ages, Renaissance, Roman times, Greek civilization, Commerce/Trade (the 1500s), or Industrial era, or tech era, whatever... It can be anything from how technology influences politics to how maybe certain historical situations affected politics (say - the slow churn of the whigs to another party). How themes in different times change (like, aside from a few people, not many people still argue about gold vs silver specie)... Or how language affects thinking and thus our political state (shades of Orwell, perhaps? or maybe not so dark). Or even "The Holy Roman Empire" and how that was arranged.
The interplay of various factors and how you think they may have spawned novel new forms in social organization, and more in particular, the political situations.
There's a lot of leeway there, I think, for some very interesting diversions and connections :)
