In my youth we said of things we didn't like that they were stupid or gay or retarded. Now it transpires that these are hurtful, untoward statements, and so they are retired. In turn there are accusations against character, more focused and truer - says me to those I meet of distasteful manner - "Coward." In a muttering voice, a tired kind of distaste, always freshly awakened by demonstrations of that vice of all vices - cowardice. No doubt that such behavior will one day be excused or beloved and the name coward will be reclaimed by chickenshits in the world and I'll be an old-timer, a laughably dated curmudgeon of the least palatable sort. Muttering into his beard.

But then there are things said, other things - I think of the distasteful forms and wonder if I can or would disclaim against them enough to alter fashion. You know I've not patience or value for the military man and I won't say a word without coercion to a police. The paradigm of uniformed authority is certainly ascendant, and one must support the troops - though this operation bears fatal similarity to respecting bullets while, perhaps, decrying guns. And so I'm in the weeds of unfashion, by my contempt for the uniform and the one who wears it - but wonders me - if someday long-away we'll all shout down the oppressor, saying to things acrimoniously improper, failing and otherwise displeasing to the adolescent palatte that such and so is - soldier, or sailor - and coward will be the accepted form - reclaimed by cowards everywhere.

And then I think too hard about democracy and being American by birth am stricken by the worst of depressions.
