Christmas shopping is hard. I was asking that kid what she wants for Christmas as she sits on the floor in her shabby clothes playing on her new computer and 3DS and iPad. "Uh, I don't know, nothing." She wants for nothing, but needs everything. I am glad that I get to be correctly fatherly and buy only interesting cool stuff. I think I'm settling on the Arduino system, a tool kit, soldering iron kit and vise. All the stuff an enterprising little kid needs. Next year? Depending on how things go it'll be robots or 3D printing. We shall see.

The trick is that we don't spend all that much time together, so I can try out these kinds of projects without them becoming some kind of lifestyle choice. In the running (but probably to be saved for Birthday times) are some kind of computer illustration tablet (the nice ones are very pricey) and a microscope and slides and slide-making stuff. I figure, the world is interesting, lets find out about it. Plus I kind of want these things, plus, she's only here a few days a week so they'll just sit unused if I don't also kind of want them.

Amusingly, I thought I'd look around on Amazon for any kind of 'starter kit' - just to see what kind of projects and tools and ideas are out there, for doing stuff. Turns out there are a ridiculous amount of starter tattoo and butt plug kits. If you're just starting out with Tattooing or Butt-Plugging - Amazon will hook you up.

My keys were sorted out by the landlord, that went successfully - I went to the hardware store to pick them up where they were waiting - and it was lucky because earlier, on the weekend I had stopped in- having remembered that they had sleds. The didn't, but swore they would have them on Tuesday - and so they did. So sled, rope, keys. Solved. Missed dinner, felt cold, realized that my stupid shoes have stupid holes. I spent all my money on electronic building kits and can't afford shoes! I know, it's a familiar story. I tell it on street corners. "I'm just trying to buy some blue LED's man, my mom is in the hospital and I can't get to where they keep the LEDs, I just have Green man and I need to get some duct tape to hold my hobo shoes together in the winter."

I'm more or less just waiting, intently, for a day off of work. I need one LIKE CRAZY.

I need the time to finish soldering our cubed game of life chips because that is going to stand in for the star on our tree.

I also need to get groceries and maybe plan ahead about eating and not miss any more meals this week. It's not good for me to just not eat and I have to remember that candy isn't enough food to count as meals. I am troubled by excesses of luxury and deficits of necessity. I am the American. That's what they call me at the bar I hang out at, in Mali.

The $50 monoprice tablet is supposed to be amazing. Two artists I follow on Tumblr swear by it!

These sound like awesome gifts. You have a lucky kid.

I looked at the monoprice and was anxious about it's quality. My trick is to be the father I wished that I had.

Not that I'd want a different one, you understand, just that. Well you get me.

Arduino for Christmas? You're doing the dad thing totally right. Kudos.
