Big & Little
Jul. 6th, 2015 09:56 amEarly in the summer we were walking the neighborhood. A lot actually, since the Spring, now that I think of it. Going to the Library to study we'd stop by a house on the boulevard - there's a gap in the barrier hedge and within are a pair of dogs - both black, one immense, lazily lumbering and one small, shrilly barky. The little one would bark when looked at, summoning the bigger one to come and let out its own ponderous woofs. We'd stop and look - not to provoke barking but just because the tiny & huge black dogs together had a kind of resonant charm.
In the midst of this she was learning the rudiments of religions. I explained the Kami, the local gods, the Jupiter Indiges - the god of the place, the Tutelary spirit & the ideology of continuity of place that these notions arise from. We were considering this and I pointed out - Big & Little are like neighborhood gods, they're a conceptual identity that you can discover (all Baader-Meinhoff) and then have a sense of place reinforced - some communion with place. Anyway we thought about Little & Big as an aspect of our place & that was nice because we're Little & Big.
A startling reminder, actually, on Thursday - we were walking around - and that thing that once in a great while happens - where, because I'm pretty large it seems like there's a problem - that there's something wrong in the world comes over someone else. A guy - maybe just really stoned, maybe crazy? I can't tell about people anymore - he stops on the sidewalk and shouts at me - angry - "You're fucking huge!" Like I made a problem for him & the world. "Calm down man." That's what I have, I was stern though - because I don't care for all that cursing - there's a lady present, a child! Dick. Anyhow this cracked up Young Agatha who just was tickled that this is a thing that could happen. It's a thing that can happen.
So walk on by. In the end we decide to go to the movie at the park later - not knowing which one it will be. We see the few things that are seeable - eat up some ice cream and have a solid evening. Heading to the park at dark there's the planets in the sky - I think Venus & Jupiter, racing - I think. "Big star, little star, planets. Big & Little." I let her know and we're both pleased about it - Jupiter Indiges indeed.
The movie ends up being Pee-Wee's Big adventure (again!). I sit alone for most of it - for most of it, she's running around with her friends who are all present - they run amok at the playground after dark & I have nostalgic sense of the goodness of that - that this is how it is to be almost an adult but outgrowing childhood. That there's an electric sense of self emergent and a thought of growing up or being grown that rises out of friendship. Anyhow - I thought on it and saw her growing big from being little.
In the morning we have Tommy's for breakfast. And buy some magazines and books from Macs and I order some out of print oddities that I need to read & then that's it.
We had a good experience with the tutelary spirit - this is the way it is, a declaration & an observance. Then there's magic made.
