It's the Future Nobody Wanted

kingtycoonOh man. So on Sunday Agatha turned 17. It's been 17 years of doing this. It was special & easy. She had a party at her mom's for all her friends - another costume party. The art-school-kids have costume parties at the drop of the hat. They love that shit.
Meantime, I've gotten more hardbitten & working-class. 17 years. It's been a good time & fun, these 17 years. I'm seeing the end, of the current arrangement - wondering how it'll go. Where I'll go. That kid. I feel like it's her tale to tell so I don't speak on her merits & achievements too much, they're hers. But her internship at the museum rolled snake-eyes & they ended up cancelling their trip to the Met in new york for their meeting of minds on account of COVID-19. I decided I'd become a huge weird nerd by typing COVID-19 all the time instead of corona. As a kid I knew a guy, he'd get weird & annoyed if you sad Nasa. "It's En-Ay-Ess-Ay!" he'd demand. A different dude with the same physique, he used to get to mad when you'd say Birthday - "You're only born once, this is the anniversary of your birth!" He'd say, wrecking your birthday. I say COVID-19. Probably cause I'm a fatso now. Like those guys.
As for coronavirus lockdowns - after 3 people in cleveland came down with it they shut everything down. On the eve of Senator Sanders' visit to CLV. Julie has been working hard on his campaign- real cheerful, she's all about it anymore & it seems to be affiliated with a change in her meds. She brought the other victory captains from Youngstown & her old stepdad - and the 6 of us went to dinner instead of a rally in the empty convention center.
It's funny because I go by there pretty often & it's always empty - you know, not that many conventions right? So seeing it empty isn't weird - when you see it full it's interesting & you have to ask around. One time I met the mayor outside and said - what's this huge convention they're having? It was for latinx engineers. They mayor told me.
On this night I spent with deadbeat children & nascent activists as well as hard-bitten old trade unionists I talked a lot about a debt strike and beat my drum some more - but got pretty puzzled & probably sounded like an asshole too. Anyhow these kids don't even know who Dennis Kucinich is. They're not from cleveland exactly but shit! Know about Dennis! I tell them but it's a drunken affair with few discussions.
I take two buses home & it's fine. The next day - the buses are all confounded. Routes aren't running & changes have been made - it seems that people aren't showing up. College is cancelled. Trips, classes.
Not work mind you. But public transit is interrupted & countries are closing up & half my company has gone to CONExpo - the biggest trade show in the world in Las Vegas for a week. I don't expect god things.
Sunday I turn 45. 10 years ago I started throwing myself elaborate birthday parties. 4 years ago I stopped. I don't know if I have a feeling about it at all now. I should definitely call my ma, take her to dinner. I just got born that day in '75 but she became a mother then. It's a bigger deal than getting born, I think.
The earth turns & the seasons change & the sun rises & sets & yet I. Am. And will be. It's 45 years of this thing I've been doing. I've got to figure out what this year's thing shall be - what is next. What is the next agenda with my 2020 vision.
